Excerpt from A Finite Difference Method for the Solution of Free Boundary Problems Free boundary problems are among the most difficult to treat either analytically or numerically. Examples of such problems are found in the occurrence of jets or cavities in classical hydrodynamics, where the location of a portion F of the boundary is unknown. These problems can be formula ted in terms of a stream function w which is the solution of a Dirichlet problem in the flow region of the physical plane.
