“No snow… why it would be like summer all the year round.” So thought the author on reading an article on Australia. “No slush, no chilblains… a young state… opportunities…” So off he went. The year was 1923 and opportunities did not come easily; the towns had nothing to offer; so he took to the bush, carrying his swag, sometimes nearly dropping from heat and thirst; sleeping under the sky with his boots for a pillow; and always when hopes mounted high to have them dashed with the same answer: “When the rain comes there’ll be work.” He learnt to travel light and alone, to do without food and drink, and never to give up hope. In the end the rains came, and he hurried sixty miles back to a farmer who had promised him a job. Here he made friends and a good start. He never looked back and grew to love the life among the kindly people of the bush.
