In the 1960s, Rose Tomlinson arrives in Canada from Jamaica on a three-week invitation letter from her dear friend, Cynthia. Rose is happy to leave her abusive husband, although not at the cost of leaving her four children with her elderly mother, Mari, who is often sick.
