A Yorkshire Tragedy is a play written by English playwright Thomas Middleton. The play is a domestic tragedy and tells the story of a Yorkshire gentleman named Walter Calverley who, after suffering financial difficulties, becomes increasingly abusive towards his wife and children. He eventually murders his two sons and attempts to kill his wife before being apprehended and executed. The play explores themes of domestic violence, mental illness, and the consequences of unchecked greed and ambition. It is believed to have been written in the early 1600s and was first published in 1608. Despite its dark subject matter, A Yorkshire Tragedy is considered a masterpiece of Jacobean drama and is still performed today.Maid Sleep, Sweet Babe: Sorrow Makes Thy Mother Sleep.
