This is a practical manual for health profeessioals who are beginning to use modern medical acupuncture. It starts from the assumption that acupuncture works via the nervous system. Moden research has largely failed to confirm the existence of precisely localised acupuncture points and these figure hardly at all in the book. Instead the focus is on understanding the principles on that determine where to insert the needles. and on getting the amount of stimulation right. Anthony Campbell was consultant physician at The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine. He introduced an acupuncture service at the hospital in 1977 and it is still one of the main complementary treatments offered there. He retired from the hospital in 1998 but continues to write on acupuncture and teach it to health professionals. Since 1981 over 5000 have attended these courses. He has published four books on acupuncture as well as numerous papers. He is a past vice-chairman of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and continues to serve on its Council.
