Don chooses to go to prison in the slim hope that doing so will one day reunite him with Kim, the troubled woman he fell in love with when he was in hiding in Portland. To protect her, he forced himself to ignore her. He could tell her nothing of his past. He could never tell her that he killed a man in self-defense.
