The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) put over three million unemployed young men to work doing conservation and recreation work on public and some private lands from 1933 to 1942. In South Dakota 28,262 young men and veterans participated. Minnesota logged 77,224 more. From 1934 to 1936 newspaperman C.N. Alleger compiled and published detailed books listing rosters and work summaries of CCC work in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and South Dakota. CCC historian Robert W. "Bob" Audretsch combed through the South Dakota and Minnesota books to list nearly 20,000 participating enrollees in 1934 including 8,917 from Minnesota, 5,309 from South Dakota, 2,399 from Kansas and 1,214 from Missouri.
