The only wild animals of size in Ireland or Scotland historically were the deer, the wolf, and the boar. The latter was admired for its strength and fierceness, and often appeared as a symbol on helmets. The grace of the deer and elk were also celebrated, and were often the centre of traditional Gaelic art. This fascinating volume explores the roles boar and deer have played in Gaelic literature throughout history, with sections on etymology, history, poetry, local lore, and much more. This volume is highly recommended for those with an interest in Gaelic history and culture, and it is not to be missed by collectors of allied literature. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on deer stalking and hunting.
