(Instrumental). This short work is written for a chamber ensemble of flute, clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), violin and cello. It takes its title from a man named James Drown, who in the early 19th century spent 5 months on a remote island in the South Atlantic. To mark the passing time, he carved a notch in a stick for each day he was there the Calendar Stick, as it is now known, is displayed in the permanent collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts. Commissioned by Peabody Essex Museum & Hub New Music. Duration: c.8 minutes
