While I wasn't able to taste the 2017 Chateauneuf Du Pape Laurus for the Southern Rhône report last year, the estate shipped a sample to my office in the US. Based on 65% Grenache (from the La Crau lieu-dit) and 35% Syrah from the lower portion of the appellation, it reveals a deep ruby/plum color as well as a great bouquet of black raspberries, smoked herbs, licorice, ground pepper, and a touch of game. About as seamless as they come, with full-bodied richness, no hard edges, and solid length on the finish, it's a beautifully Provençal, undeniably delicious 2017 to enjoy over the coming decade. Maturity: 2020-2030.
