How do the descendants of enslaved people from the West Indies perceive the consequences of transatlantic slavery today? How do they view this legacy? What do the variations in discourses from one island to another reveal?
This book presents an original study based on a survey on slavery in Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint Lucia, to which 100 people responded. The findings provide an overview of how this heritage is perceived, while revealing the common and unique elements that shape the understanding of their ancestors' experiences. This study explores the issues at play for the descendants of enslaved people across psychological, social, and societal levels. Through an analysis of discourses, representations, and emotions, it sheds light on the factors that fuel a sense of wounds and those that promote healing.
