A boy is trying to help his brother escape the same treatment at the hands of his father he did, so with a friend, they make a daring escape. But the darkness of their homes is replaced by a darkness in the larger world. The boys must reconcile their own feelings for one another that have been in the background because they were always under immediate threat, and in doing so they must also figure out who they are in a world that promises nothing and delivers less.
