Memoir in Nine:From Paris to Quảng Trị, a bilingual poetry artbook, was developed and assembled for 2025, the 50th year since the end of the Vietnam War. Paris was part of Vietnam's history from colonialism to the negotiations of the Paris Peace Treaty, and Quảng Trị was the site of significant bloodshed during the Vietnam conflict. The book gives a view of Vietnamese modern history and the Vietnam War, its background, escalation, ending, and long-term residual aftermath. The author is the first Vietnamese American appointed to a judgeship in America, and the winner of South Vietnam's national literary prize (awarded one month before South Vietnam was taken over by Northern communists). A good part of her work is long narrative poetry in prose, a form that is hardly used now in the literary West. She instinctively and subconsciously composed poetic narratives like short short-stories, film scripts, or scenes for music videos. Further, she did not translate; intead, she composed directly in both languages: Vietnamese and English. She hopes to use her voice, a one-woman journey of a scholar-poet, to help depict the Vietnamese American diasporic history. Personal notes about her selected nine poems constitute part of her memoir. From her South Vietnamese perspective, the Vietnam War represented the Cold War between the Free World and the Communist Bloc. She was a victim and a survivor of the War. Various human dilemmas resulting therefrom are still hauntingly relevant: Political asylum and cross-cultural issues are repeated universal experience.
