The sinking of the MV Barima on July 18, 2026, forever changed the lives of hundreds of Guyanese families and reverberated beyond Port Kaituma, Morawhanna and Region One, beyond Guyana's borders and across the Atlantic Ocean. It reverberated in the entire Caribbean Community to the diaspora in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and beyond. Some passengers never returned home. Others survived only to carry memories that will remain with them for the rest of their lives memories that no words can contain or describe, memories written on their faces that speak of an indescribable pain and terror. This is a chronicle of the tragedy in the voices of the victims, the survivors and the families bereaved by the sinking of this vessel.
Every journey begins with the expectation of arrival. On Saturday, July 18, 2026, hundreds of Guyanese gathered at the Kingston Wharf Harbour in Georgetown Stelling carrying boxes, bags, mattresses, groceries, appliances, and wares. But most of all they were carrying hopes of returning home. Some had spent the week in the city buying school supplies. Others were returning from medical appointments, family visits, or business. One family carried the body of a loved one home for burial. Children looked forward to the start of their summer holidays. Crew members reported for another routine voyage, expecting to return within days. Region One in Northern Guyana is heavily populated by indigenous people and is remote. Transportation in and out is challenging by land and is in the hinterlands with eroded roads and served by substandard vessels.and little accountability.
This book was born from a simple conviction: that these voices should never be lost.
