Neither Out Far Nor In Deep
Seventeen-year-old Kadeem Johnson has just been suspended—again. His mother, fed up with his choices, makes a drastic decision: she's sending him to St. Kitts to live with the grandfather he barely knows.
Kadeem is sure this is just a punishment, a temporary exile from his real life. But the island has its own lessons—tough ones. No WiFi. No video games. No way out. Just long days, strict rules, and a school where he doesn't fit in.
But as the days stretch on, Kadeem begins to see St. Kitts differently . There's something about the island—the people, the stories, even the silence—that starts to get under his skin. Maybe this place isn't just somewhere he was sent. Maybe it's trying to teach him something.
A coming-of-age story about unexpected second chances, family, and finding yourself in the last place you'd expect.
"A compelling coming-of-age story set against the vibrant backdrop of St. Kitts." — Kirkus Reviews
Readers' Favorite (Pikasho Deka, 5-Star Review):
"Full of humor and heart, Neither Out Far Nor In Deep is a charming coming-of-age story that puts a smile on your face. Kadeem's evolution from a naive city brat to a young man embracing the island life feels authentic and organic… If you're looking for a well-written coming-of-age tale, this is the book for you."
Readers' Favorite (Michaela Gordoni, 5-Star Review):
"Leah T. Williams does a great job of getting into the head of a teenage boy. Neither Out Far Nor In Deep is a brief and entertaining read that will interest teens, helping them step outside their own perspectives to learn about other cultures."
Readers' Favorite (K.C. Finn, 5-Star Review):
"These kinds of cross-cultural exploration books are essential reading for schools and youngsters everywhere... Neither Out Far Nor In Deep is a highly recommended read, filled with high-quality emotional drama, sociocultural depth, and a central character you're sure to adore."
