"1984", by George Orwell, magnificently described an authoritarian government in its future, possibly a warning to future generations of a government that controls every aspect of your being, down to your very thoughts. With today's technology and certainly future advancements, "2084" explores a scenario where humanity allows the government of the day to seize control of your existence under the guise of safety over autonomy. "2084" shows that an extinction event is just the crisis needed for the government to rule supreme over the masses that survived. Author Guy Phillips's portrayal of possible future events and the outcome of such events is the modern version of totalitarianism and describes what Orwell understood but without the knowledge of technology to intertwine his story. Whether it's the technology of the 1980s or the 2080s, the lesson is still the same. Would you choose safety over freedom?
