When 19th-century British missionaries arrived in the Caribbean to convert enslaved Africans they created what came to known as the Slave Bible.(14 books out of the 66 books that make up the protestant canon which equates to roughly 10% of the O.T. and almost 50% of the N.T). Slavery has been abolished. But its effects and residue remain an everyday reality. And many still misuse the Bible in personal and corporate context that denigrate the poor and marginalized and especially those who are not on board with “making America great again”. History matters. Truth matters. From time immemorial faith in God has always been foundational for Black people. For this reason, it matters to know about and see evidence of the “Black presence in the bible”.
