Captain Hake, born in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1850, sailed on both sailing ships and steam vessels, spending 11 years in the whale trade before becoming a Pilot at Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania, in 1895. He later served as Harbour Master and Master Warden of the Strahan Marine Board.
This book offers a glimpse of Strahan at the turn of the 20th century and the major harbour works undertaken to create a safe passage through Hell’s Gates.
Through this research, Captain Hake emerges above all as a man of the sea—disciplined, courteous, and a true gentleman. This is the 2nd and updated e-book edition.
