Laparoscopic tubal ligation is most widely used and trusted method for female sterilization done on day care basis. Various anaesthetic techniques have been used to ensure rapid recovery and home readiness. Ketamine, a dissociative anaesthetic agent produces sedation, amnesia and profound analgesia. Its use in day care surgery has been limited because of the potential postoperative psychotomimetic side effects (illusions, disturbing dreams, delirium), increased arterial blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output and intracranial pressure. Emergence phenomena, postoperative nausea and vomiting has also been related to the use of ketamine. Propofol is commonly used as inducing agent which causes decrease in arterial blood pressure, cardiac contractility, preload, cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. It also acts as an anti-emetic with no emergence phenomenon. However, undesirable side effects such as hypotension and respiratory depression are common with the use of propofol. We hypothesize that when a combination of ketamine and propofol is used, the adverse effects of one drug will be counteracted by the other drug.
