本書呼應近十年來台灣跨文化莊子學研究思潮之問題意識，探討道家哲學（主要是莊子）如何回應現代性之問題。透過跨文化哲學的方法，本書比較莊子與西方哲學家（如海德格、孟柯、鄂蘭、南希等）對於「弔詭」與「共在」的討論，使得本書具有國際研究的視野。本書分為兩部分，第一部分「弔詭」探討存有論與政治之間的關聯性，回應當代哲學家牟宗三以「辯證」方式連結存有論與政治，本書試圖提出「弔詭」的模型超克之。第二部分「共在」透過與西方哲學的對話，試圖開創莊子哲學的社會性。透過本書，筆者希望打開莊子哲學的政治社會向度，以補充傳統上對於道家新外王討論的空缺。
