"Dissolve" is a descent into a quiet world, rich in language and representing the spiritual landscape that lives beneath the individual ego. Jon Obermeyer's ninth collection of poetry is decidedly focused on mindfulness and the spiritual journey. Drawing on the Eastern influences of Buddhism and Taoism, this book explores the Eastern core of the Judaic and Christian traditions of Obermeyer's upbringing as a Presbyterian and his adult tenure as an Episcopalian. This is a homecoming of sorts. In the Afterword to the book, the poet observes, "If you look across my writing, including the poetry I have published since 2016, there is a common thread: reclamation of soul, as well as an exploration of spirit, mostly through nature. I occasionally use the word "meditation" in poem titles, as well as the liberal use of religious and spiritual illusions. " Riffing on "The Low Wire," his 2016 and 2018 collection of essays, Jon adds "If you know loss, you know yourself; plain and simple. I've been to the depths and touched solid rock. I know what I'm made of. There's something about taking that fantastic plunge into the depths, that makes the surface air taste delicious." If you are just at the beginning of your spiritual journey, or if you are paused on a plateau, this book is for you.
