French historian Hippolyte Noiret (1864–88) wrote works on the Greek scholar Demetrios Chalkokondyles (1423–1511), and edited the collected letters of Greek theologian Michael Apostolius (1422–78). A specialist on Cretan history, Noiret had originally intended to chart the history of the island from the Venetian conquest in 1205–12 to its fall to the Ottomans in the seventeenth century. However, the project was left unfinished following Noiret's early death. First published in 1892, this book contains Noiret's research on the history of the Venetian administration of Crete between 1380 and 1485. The material published here consists of his notes, drawn from the archival records of the Venetian senate, and offers a wealth of facts and anecdotes about the Venetian administration of Crete, which will be of interest both to historians and to visitors to the island, which still abounds in visible remains of the Venetian period.
