Excerpt from Extension of Emergency Unemployment Compensation: Hearing Before the Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives, One Hundred Third Congress, First Session, February 18, 1993 In announcing the hearing, Chairman Rostenkowski said Although we have seen many positive economic signs recently, job growth has been disappointing, and long-term unemployment persists. We need more jobs. But until we can create more jobs, the long-term unemployed still need our help. As President Clinton has proposed, extending the emergency program through the end of this fiscal year will provide this help. In the meantime, I will be working hard to ensure that President Clinton's economic stimulus and long-term deficit reduction packages succeed.
