Reviews developments of the last few years and progress made since Painleve's (1863-1933) and Gambier's fundamental work, on the theory of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, the solutions of which have no movable singularities, other than poles, and the extension of this theory to partial differential equations. The proceedings are organized according to four basic topics: asymptotics of Painleve transcendents, connection formulas, new mathematical features; Painleve analysis and integrability; group theoretical and geometrical aspects of Painleve equations; and applications of Painleve transcendents.
