Rick loses his mother young; raised by his father, a high-ranking Klan member. Jack loses his father early and grows up with his mother in a working-class neighborhood. Rick's father is killed by a Black man during a robbery in 1981. Jack's mother struggles to keep them afloat, shaping his survivalist mindset. Rick moves to Great Falls, Montana, living with an aunt whose boyfriend is in The Brotherhood. They groom him with White Nationalist ideology.
