Banic witnessed a plane crash which killed the pilot and in response, patented an early parachute (No. 1,108,484)... his background is that of a coal miner. Garrett Morgan witnessed an accident at an intersection involving a horse carriage and an automobile in the 1920s which killed the passenger.
