Geneva (Gene) Stratton was born Hopewell farm in Wabash County, Indiana, on August 17, 1863. She took to writing at an early age and soon became a popular author, writing for such periodicals as Recreation and Outing. Her first two novels were Song of the Cardinal (1903) and Freckles (1904).
