Christian Sutter left Bavaria during the 1840s as a young, single man. He left his family behind including his father, who served the Amish Mennonite Church as an ordained Minister of the Book, while successfully managing a farm. He arrived in central Illinois to discover reasonably-priced land that enabled him to purchase farms, some of which to this day are owned by his descendants.Immigration provided not only economic opportunities, but also allowed him to follow his religious beliefs according to the dictates of his conscience. He was active in and gave leadership to the local Amish Mennonite Church. Christian Sutter and his family hosted the Fourteenth Annual Minister's Meeting of the Amish Mennonite Ministry in 1875. The meetings were held in a spacious barn erected in 1868.His descendants are numerous and have served as farmers, factory workers, educators, medical workers, including physicians and dentists, ministers, and many others. This book tells his story.
