Hamish and Laurette are love birds who live at opposite ends of a long vine in the jungle, but is this task for the ant such an honour? The ant begins to have doubts when other creatures of the jungle ask why he is doing a love bird such a big favour. The story was inspired by a commission for the Guildford Public Library in Surrey, B.C. On a single vine stretching from one end of the mural to the other, an ant carries a leaf letter. After only a few tellings, this story became an oral story, told by children to each other for thirteen years before Duncan turned it into this book.
