This story, based on real people and events, is set in the first half of the twentieth century, primarily in the rough and ready regions of Texas and Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The central character is Carlos Benson, an appealing, ambitious, and talented young man with a promising future but whose reactions to events, tendency to veer off course, and whose inability to sustain relationships combine to put his life in jeopardy.
