A Book for Explaining Depression to Young Children It is very hard to find the words to discuss mental illness with our children. We want to be open and honest, but at the same time, we don't want to frighten or overwhelm them. The Sticky Switch is based upon how I explained my own depression to my children when they were younger. It explains the difference between simple sadness and depression as well as the stigma attached. Most importantly, it lets children know that it is not their fault nor is it their job to fix things or make it better. The Sticky Switch is written to be easy to read, as well as open and honest without ever talking down to the child. It encourages asking questions and starting a dialogue so our next generation won't treat mental illness like that dirty secret they cannot talk about.
