A friend of mine once told me, "don't ever drink with a man who cannot laugh at himself because you will feel worse than hung over before your first sip!" That being said, there are a lot of people who complain about being in business for themselves. There are a lot of people who tell you the pitfalls but never mention the excitement. There are people who will dissuade you with tales of their own regret. If those folks sound like fun to you then by all means lend them your ears. But . . . if there is any chance that you can step outside of yourself just long enough to recognize the humor and irony and stupidity and dumb luck that entrepreneurs face on a daily basis then by all means read on. Being in business for yourself may not be a comedy but that does not mean it has to be a drama. Perhaps it is best to think of it as a variety show. Lots of things will happen and no two shows will be exactly the same. One act will be a string quartet and the next might be a standup comedian. In business for yourself you can never be sure what the day will bring and that alone can make the endeavor worth it. So, if you can take yourself a little less seriously for a few moments, go ahead and read a chapter or two. You will probably be entertained and you might just learn a thing or two.
